PCOS — Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

PCOS is one of the most common hormonal disorders affecting women of reproductive age, causing irregular ovulation and reduced fertility.

Overview

What is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects approximately 1 in 10 women of childbearing age. It is one of the leading causes of female infertility. Women with PCOS have higher-than-normal levels of androgens (male hormones), which can interfere with the development and release of eggs during ovulation.

How PCOS Affects Fertility

PCOS disrupts normal ovulation, making it difficult or impossible to conceive naturally. At Iswarya Fertility, our specialists use targeted protocols — including ovulation induction, IUI, and IVF — tailored to each patient's hormonal profile to maximise the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Symptoms

Irregular or absent menstrual periods
Excess facial or body hair (hirsutism)
Unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight
Acne and oily skin
Thinning hair on the scalp
Difficulty conceiving

Causes

1
Insulin resistance leading to elevated androgen levels
2
Genetic predisposition (family history of PCOS)
3
Chronic low-grade inflammation
4
Excess luteinising hormone (LH) production

How It's Diagnosed

Pelvic ultrasound to detect ovarian cysts
Blood tests for hormone levels (FSH, LH, testosterone, AMH)
Fasting glucose and insulin resistance panel
